What Makes Dust Explosive

Any combustible material becomes an explosion hazard when dispersed as fine particles in air. Wood dust, metal powders, grain, flour, sugar, coal, and plastic dusts have all caused fatal explosions. The finer the particle, the greater the risk.

Five conditions create a dust explosion: fuel (the dust), oxygen, ignition source, dispersion, and confinement. Remove the fuel through proper cleaning and you eliminate the hazard.
